A simple, thorough screening for greater peace of mind.
At Bucks County Periodontics, your oral health is about more than your teeth and gums. It is also about identifying changes in the mouth early, understanding what those changes may mean, and helping you take the right next step with confidence.
An oral cancer exam is a quick, non-invasive screening that allows Dr. Ryan Kaye to evaluate the soft tissues of your mouth, tongue, gums, lips, jaw, and surrounding areas for signs of concern. In many cases, this exam can be completed in just a few minutes as part of a broader periodontal visit.
Whether you are visiting our Bensalem or Richboro office, our goal is simple: to provide careful, compassionate, clinically informed care that helps you feel supported and informed.
About Oral Cancer Exams
An oral cancer exam is a visual and physical evaluation of the mouth and surrounding tissues. During the exam, Dr. Kaye looks for changes that may require monitoring, follow-up, or additional evaluation.
This may include:
→ Unusual red or white patches
→ Sores that do not heal
→ Lumps, thickened tissue, or rough areas
→ Unexplained bleeding or tenderness
→ Changes in the tongue, gums, cheeks, lips, or roof of the mouth
→ Swelling in the jaw or neck
→ Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the tongue comfortably
Most changes in the mouth are not cancer. Irritation, trauma, infection, autoimmune conditions, and other common issues can all create symptoms that feel concerning. But when something does not look or feel right—especially if it persists—it deserves professional attention.
That is where an oral cancer exam can help.
Why Oral Cancer Screenings Matter
Oral and throat cancers can sometimes develop without obvious discomfort in the early stages. Some patients notice a sore, patch, lump, or change in sensation. Others may not notice anything unusual at all.
A professional exam gives Dr. Kaye the opportunity to identify tissue changes that may not be easy to see or interpret at home. If something looks concerning, he can explain what he sees, recommend appropriate next steps, and coordinate further evaluation when needed.
The purpose of the exam is not to create alarm. It is to provide clarity.
Oral Cancer Risk is Not Limited to Smokers
Many people still associate oral cancer only with heavy tobacco or alcohol use. Those remain important risk factors, but they are not the only ones.
Certain cancers of the throat and back of the mouth—known as oropharyngeal cancers—have been linked to HPV, or human papillomavirus. Because of this, oral and throat cancer awareness is no longer limited to older adults or patients with a history of smoking.
This does not mean every patient should be worried. It means regular professional evaluation is a smart, proactive part of maintaining your overall oral health.
If you have questions about your personal risk factors, Dr. Kaye can discuss them with you during your visit in a calm, straightforward way.
Symptoms That Should Be Evaluated
It is always better to have a persistent change checked than to wait and wonder. If you notice any of the following symptoms, schedule an evaluation:
A white or red spot in the mouth
White or red patches can appear on the gums, tongue, cheeks, palate, or other soft tissues. Many are not cancerous, but a patch that does not resolve should be examined.
A sore that does not heal
A mouth sore, ulcer, or irritated area that lasts longer than two weeks should be professionally evaluated.
A lump, bump, or thickened area
Any new or unexplained lump in the mouth, cheek, jaw, gum tissue, or neck should be checked.
Difficulty chewing or swallowing
Pain, pressure, or the sensation that something is caught in the throat may require further evaluation.
Changes in speech, bite, or denture fit
If your bite suddenly feels different, your dentures no longer fit correctly, or speaking feels uncomfortable, it may be worth scheduling an exam.
Persistent pain, tenderness, or bleeding
Ongoing discomfort, unexplained bleeding, or tenderness in the mouth or throat should not be ignored.
If you are unsure whether something is serious, that is exactly the reason to be seen. Dr. Kaye can help determine whether the area is likely benign, needs monitoring, or requires additional diagnostic follow-up.
Symptoms That Should Be Evaluated
An oral cancer exam at Bucks County Periodontics is simple, gentle, and non-invasive. There are no needles, no drilling, and no special preparation required.
During your exam, Dr. Kaye may:
Examine the soft tissues of your mouth
This includes the gums, tongue, cheeks, lips, roof of the mouth, floor of the mouth, and throat area.
Check for visible changes
Dr. Kaye will look for patches, sores, swelling, discoloration, asymmetry, or other tissue changes.
Gently feel the jaw, neck, and oral tissues
This helps identify any unusual lumps, firmness, tenderness, or swelling that may not be visible.
Discuss your health history
You may be asked about tobacco use, alcohol use, HPV history, recent symptoms, medications, immune health, prior oral lesions, or changes you have noticed.
Recommend next steps when needed
If something appears unusual, Dr. Kaye may recommend monitoring, follow-up imaging, referral, biopsy, or coordination with another specialist depending on the finding.
The exam itself is typically brief, but the peace of mind can be significant.
