What to Expect When Getting Dental Implants at Our Bensalem Office
For more than thirty years, Bucks County Periodontics has been a trusted name in specialty dental care in the Bensalem community. From our earliest days under founding practitioner Dr. Alan L. Krochtengel to the leadership of Dr. Ryan Kaye today, our office has remained committed to providing compassionate, expert periodontal care to every patient who walks through our doors. Whether you’re new to our practice or considering dental implants for the first time, we want to take you behind the scenes and show you what makes our Bensalem office a place patients return to—and recommend—year after year.
Dental implants are one of the most transformative procedures we perform, and for many patients, they’re the first step toward regaining confidence in their smile, their bite, and their overall oral health. In this article, we’ll guide you through what to expect when getting dental implants at our office. Along the way, you’ll also get to know the team that makes our practice so special, as well as the full range of periodontal services available right here in Bensalem.
A Tradition of Care: Thirty-Plus Years in Bensalem
Bucks County Periodontics has been part of the local dental landscape for decades, serving patients not only from Bensalem but also from across the greater Bucks County area, including Richboro, Doylestown, and beyond. Our history is woven into the community itself. Many of our patients have been with us for generations, entrusting their periodontal health to our care.
Much of that continuity is thanks to Tara Susko, our receptionist and one of the most familiar and welcoming faces in the office. Tara has been with Bucks County Periodontics for more than thirty years—longer than anyone else on our staff and even longer than Dr. Kaye himself. She was originally hired by Dr. Krochtengel, and over the years, she has welcomed thousands of patients, often remembering families by name and story. Her warmth and institutional knowledge help anchor our practice’s reputation for consistency and community trust.
While the rest of our staff is newer, each team member brings expertise, enthusiasm, and a shared commitment to the high standard of care established by Dr. Krochtengel and carried forward by Dr. Kaye.

What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are titanium posts that act as artificial tooth roots, providing a secure foundation for replacement teeth such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. They are designed to look, feel, and function just like natural teeth. For patients who have lost teeth due to decay, trauma, or gum disease, implants offer a long-term solution that restores not only appearance but also functionality and confidence.
Unlike removable dentures, implants are permanent. They integrate with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration, which allows them to serve as stable anchors for restorations. This makes them the gold standard in tooth replacement today.
Why Choose Dental Implants?
Patients choose dental implants for many reasons:
- Durability: With proper care, implants can last a lifetime.
- Functionality: They allow you to bite, chew, and speak with confidence.
- Appearance: Implants look and feel like natural teeth.
- Bone Preservation: Implants help prevent bone loss in the jaw, which often occurs after tooth loss.
- Comfort: No slipping, clicking, or adhesives—just stability.
At Bucks County Periodontics, we specialize in implant dentistry. Dr. Kaye has extensive training and experience in placing implants, ensuring predictable results tailored to each patient’s needs.
What to Expect When Getting Dental Implants at Our Bensalem Office
Every patient journey is unique, but here’s a general roadmap of what to expect when you choose our office for dental implant treatment.
1. Initial Consultation
Your implant journey begins with a comprehensive consultation. Dr. Kaye will review your medical and dental history, discuss your goals, and perform a thorough examination. We use advanced imaging—including 3D imaging and digital impressions—to evaluate bone density, gum health, and overall suitability for implants.
During this visit, you’ll meet members of our team, from Tara and Tammy at the front desk to Jenna and Palak in the operatory. Our goal is to make you feel informed and at ease.
2. Treatment Planning
If implants are right for you, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan. This may include preparatory procedures like bone grafting, sinus grafting, or socket preservation, depending on your specific needs. These steps help create a strong foundation for successful implant placement.
3. Implant Placement
The implant procedure itself is performed in-office by Dr. Kaye. Using precision techniques and modern surgical protocols, he places the titanium post into the jawbone. Patients are kept comfortable with appropriate anesthesia and sedation options. Jenna, our assistant, will be right by your side to ensure you feel supported during the process.
4. Healing and Osseointegration
After placement, a healing period of several months allows the implant to integrate with the jawbone. During this time, Palak will help you maintain gum and oral health through cleanings and check-ups, ensuring the implant site heals properly.
5. Restoration
Once the implant is fully integrated, your general dentist will attach the final crown, bridge, or denture to the implant post. The result is a functional, natural-looking tooth replacement that blends seamlessly with your smile.
6. Long-Term Maintenance
Dental implants require the same care as natural teeth: daily brushing and flossing, along with regular professional cleanings and check-ups. Our team will partner with you for ongoing periodontal maintenance to keep your implants and gums healthy for years to come.
Beyond Implants: Comprehensive Periodontal Services in Bensalem
While implants are a cornerstone of what we do, Bucks County Periodontics offers a wide range of specialty services, including:

Solutions for Gum Recession: Gum Grafting Services in Richboro
When it comes to maintaining a healthy, confident smile, most people think about teeth first—brushing, flossing, whitening, and regular checkups. But your gums play just as important a role in oral health. Healthy gums not only support your teeth but also protect their roots and help prevent more serious oral health problems.
At Bucks County Periodontics, we often see patients concerned about gum recession—a common condition where the gum tissue begins to pull away from the teeth, exposing the roots. If left untreated, gum recession can lead to sensitivity, tooth damage, and even tooth loss. Fortunately, there are effective solutions. At our Richboro office, located at 832 Second Street Pike, Richboro, PA 18954, we offer advanced gum grafting procedures that can restore gum health, protect your teeth, and improve your smile.
In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about gum recession and gum grafting: what it is, why it happens, how the procedure works, what recovery looks like, and why Bucks County Periodontics is the trusted choice for gum grafting services in the Richboro area.
Understanding Gum Recession
What Is Gum Recession?
Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or even its root. This can create gaps or “pockets” between your teeth and gums, where bacteria can build up.
In mild cases, gum recession may simply cause cosmetic concerns or sensitivity to hot and cold. In more advanced cases, it can damage the supporting bone structure and increase the risk of tooth loss.
Common Signs of Gum Recession
Many patients don’t realize they have gum recession until it becomes advanced. Some of the most common warning signs include:
- Teeth that appear longer than normal
- Exposed tooth roots
- Increased sensitivity to temperature changes or sweets
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Bad breath that doesn’t go away
- Loose teeth
If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule an evaluation with a periodontal specialist like Dr. Ryan Kaye at our Richboro office.
Causes of Gum Recession
Gum recession can result from several factors, including:
- Periodontal Disease: The most common cause, bacterial infections destroy gum tissue and supporting bone.
- Aggressive Brushing: Brushing too hard or with a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear away gum tissue.
- Genetics: Some people are predisposed to thinner gum tissue, making them more vulnerable.
- Poor Oral Hygiene: Inconsistent brushing and flossing can lead to plaque buildup and gum problems.
- Tobacco Use: Smoking or chewing tobacco weakens gum tissue and slows healing.
- Hormonal Changes: Shifts during pregnancy, puberty, or menopause can make gums more sensitive.
- Grinding or Clenching Teeth: Excessive pressure on the teeth can contribute to gum damage.
- Misaligned Teeth: Teeth that don’t fit together properly can place extra stress on the gums and bone.
Identifying the underlying cause of gum recession is a critical first step before beginning treatment.
What Is Gum Grafting?
Gum grafting is a specialized surgical procedure designed to repair receding gums, protect exposed tooth roots, and restore a natural gum line. By adding new tissue to areas where the gums have receded, gum grafting not only improves oral health but also enhances the appearance of your smile.
Benefits of Gum Grafting
- Protects Tooth Roots: Prevents further exposure and reduces sensitivity.
- Reduces Risk of Decay and Damage: Covers vulnerable areas of the teeth.
- Improves Smile Aesthetics: Restores a natural gum line and balanced appearance.
- Prevents Further Recession: Reinforces gums against ongoing damage.
- Supports Long-Term Oral Health: Protects bone and teeth from loss due to recession.
Types of Gum Grafting Procedures
At Bucks County Periodontics in Richboro, Dr. Ryan Kaye uses several different gum grafting techniques depending on your specific needs:
- Connective Tissue Graft
- The most common technique. Tissue is taken from beneath the surface of the roof of the mouth and placed over the exposed root.
- Ideal for treating root exposure and improving aesthetics.
- Free Gingival Graft
- Tissue is taken directly from the roof of the mouth and placed onto the gum area.
- Often used for patients with thin gum tissue who need added thickness.
- Pedicle Graft
- Uses tissue from gum areas adjacent to the recession. The flap of tissue is partially cut and repositioned to cover the exposed root.
- Works best for patients who have plenty of gum tissue nearby.
Each procedure has its own advantages, and during your consultation at our Richboro office, Dr. Kaye will explain which method is best suited for your situation.
The Gum Grafting Process at Our Richboro Office
Step 1: Consultation and Diagnosis
Your first visit begins with a comprehensive periodontal evaluation. Using advanced tools like 3D imaging and digital impressions, Dr. Kaye will carefully assess the severity of gum recession and develop a personalized treatment plan.
Step 2: Preparing for Surgery
Before the procedure, you’ll receive detailed pre-operative instructions. Most gum grafting procedures are performed under local anesthesia to ensure comfort. Sedation options are also available for patients with dental anxiety.
Step 3: The Procedure
During the procedure:
- Tissue is harvested (either from your mouth or using donor tissue).
- The graft is carefully placed over the exposed root or recession area.
- The graft is sutured in place, and the site is protected with dressing if needed.
The process typically takes one to two hours, depending on the number of teeth treated.
Step 4: Immediate Recovery
After the procedure, you’ll be able to go home the same day. Some swelling, minor bleeding, and discomfort are normal, but these symptoms usually subside within a few days.
Aftercare and Recovery
Proper aftercare is essential for the success of a gum graft. At our Richboro office, we’ll provide detailed instructions to make recovery smooth and effective.
What to Expect After Gum Grafting
- Mild soreness and swelling for a few days
- Possible dietary restrictions (soft foods recommended)
- Sutures may dissolve on their own or be removed during a follow-up visit
- Full healing can take a few weeks, with complete integration of graft tissue within months
Post-Operative Care Tips
- Take prescribed medications as directed
- Avoid brushing or flossing in the grafted area until cleared by Dr. Kaye
- Stick to soft, cool foods such as yogurt, smoothies, and eggs
- Avoid smoking, as it slows healing
- Attend follow-up appointments to monitor progress

Our Comprehensive Services at the Richboro Office
Below, we’ll walk you through the wide range of services available at our Richboro office, explaining what each treatment involves and how it may benefit you.
Periodontal Maintenance
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Periodontal maintenance is the ongoing care that follows periodontal therapy, such as scaling and root planing. This involves routine deep cleanings to remove plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline, preventing recurrence of periodontal disease. Patients typically return every three to four months for maintenance, depending on their condition.
Complex Extractions
Sometimes, teeth cannot be saved due to decay, trauma, or infection. In these cases, Dr. Kaye performs complex extractions with precision and care, ensuring minimal discomfort and optimal healing. Our goal is to preserve as much healthy bone and gum tissue as possible, which is especially important if dental implants may be placed in the future.
Professional Teeth Cleaning
Routine dental cleanings are essential for everyone, even if you brush and floss regularly. Our hygienist at the Richboro office provides thorough cleanings that remove hardened plaque (calculus) and polish teeth to keep them looking and feeling their best. These cleanings are also an important step in preventing gum disease.
Bruxism Treatment
Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can cause significant damage to teeth and lead to jaw pain, headaches, and periodontal concerns. We provide custom-made night guards and other treatment options to help protect your teeth and gums from the damaging effects of grinding and clenching.
Scaling and Root Planing
When periodontal disease is present, scaling and root planing is often the first line of treatment. This deep-cleaning procedure removes plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins from below the gumline, while smoothing root surfaces to help gums reattach to teeth. This treatment is highly effective at stopping the progression of gum disease.
Bone Grafting
Bone loss is a common consequence of advanced periodontal disease or missing teeth. Bone grafting helps rebuild and strengthen the jawbone, creating a stable foundation for dental implants or preventing further bone deterioration. Our Richboro office uses the latest materials and techniques to promote natural bone regeneration.
Bite Adjustment
An uneven bite can place excess pressure on certain teeth, leading to mobility, wear, and discomfort. Through selective reshaping of tooth surfaces, Dr. Kaye can improve how your teeth come together, reducing trauma to the gums and bone while restoring comfort and function.
Pocket Reduction Surgery
When gum disease causes deep pockets between teeth and gums, bacteria can thrive, worsening the condition. Pocket reduction surgery involves gently folding back the gum tissue, removing harmful bacteria, and securing the gum back in place for easier cleaning and better oral health moving forward.
Socket Preservation
After a tooth is extracted, the surrounding bone can deteriorate quickly. Socket preservation helps maintain the shape and density of the bone, making it easier to place a dental implant later. This procedure involves carefully filling the socket with bone graft material and covering it to promote healing.
Gum Grafting
Gum recession can lead to sensitivity, root exposure, and an uneven smile. Gum grafting restores lost tissue by covering exposed roots, improving both oral health and aesthetics. At Bucks County Periodontics, we use advanced grafting techniques to create natural-looking, long-lasting results.
Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that reshapes the gum and bone tissue to expose more of the tooth structure. This may be done for functional reasons—such as preparing a tooth for a crown—or cosmetic purposes, such as improving a “gummy smile.”
Guided Bone & Tissue Regeneration
For patients with advanced periodontal disease or bone loss, guided bone and tissue regeneration offers a way to encourage natural regrowth. Using barrier membranes and specialized grafting materials, this technique allows bone and tissue to regenerate in areas where they have been lost.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. They act as artificial tooth roots that support crowns, bridges, or dentures, providing stability and a natural appearance. Our Richboro office offers complete implant services—from evaluation and surgical placement to aftercare.
Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery
A healthy smile should also be a confident smile. Cosmetic periodontal surgery includes procedures such as gum contouring and tissue reshaping to improve the symmetry and appearance of your gums. Whether you want to reduce excess gum tissue or restore balance to your smile, we provide customized treatment plans.
Oral Cancer Exam
Early detection is crucial in successfully treating oral cancer. As part of our comprehensive approach, we perform oral cancer screenings during routine visits. These exams are quick, painless, and can help identify early warning signs before they progress.
Sinus Grafting
In some cases, patients lack sufficient bone in the upper jaw to support dental implants. Sinus grafting (or sinus lift surgery) adds bone to the area beneath the sinus, creating a strong foundation for implant placement. This procedure has a high success rate and significantly improves long-term outcomes for implant patients.
3D Imaging
Accurate diagnosis and treatment planning are critical in periodontal care. Our Richboro office is equipped with advanced 3D imaging technology, allowing us to see precise details of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. This improves accuracy, minimizes risks, and enhances treatment outcomes.
Digital Impressions
Gone are the days of messy dental molds. With digital impressions, we can create accurate 3D models of your mouth in minutes using a handheld scanner. These digital scans are more comfortable for patients and allow us to design restorations, appliances, and treatments with greater precision.

Beyond his technical expertise, Dr. Kaye is known for his ability to see the bigger picture: periodontal health as the foundation of overall oral health. He takes the time to walk each patient through their treatment plan, explaining the “why” behind every procedure. This patient-first approach ensures that no one feels left in the dark when making important decisions about their health.
With Dr. Kaye guiding the clinical team, patients at the Richboro office can rest assured that their care is in excellent hands.
Maggie Cirino & Susan Lackman – Receptionists and Patient Coordinators

From your very first phone call to your final follow-up visit, Maggie and Susan ensure your experience is seamless and stress-free. They help with scheduling, answer questions about insurance or treatment logistics, and guide patients through the administrative side of care.
For many patients, visiting a periodontist can feel intimidating at first. That’s why having a warm and supportive front desk team makes all the difference. Maggie and Susan’s professionalism, organization, and genuine care create an environment where patients feel comfortable from the moment they arrive.
Jenna Mozer – Dental Assistant
Behind the scenes (and often chairside), Jenna Mozer plays a crucial role in supporting both Dr. Kaye and our patients. As a dental assistant, Jenna ensures that every procedure runs smoothly by preparing the treatment space, assisting during procedures, and providing patients with reassurance throughout their appointments.
Her role is especially vital during advanced treatments like bone grafting, socket preservation, crown lengthening, and pocket reduction surgery. These procedures require precision and coordination between the periodontist and assistant, and Jenna’s expertise makes her an invaluable part of the team.
Patients often comment on Jenna’s kindness and attentiveness. Whether she’s explaining post-operative care or simply offering a reassuring presence during treatment, Jenna helps create a positive and supportive clinical environment.
Palak Patel – Registered Dental Hygienist
When it comes to long-term periodontal health, consistent maintenance and preventative care are just as important as surgical interventions. That’s where Palak Patel, our registered dental hygienist, comes in.
Palak’s role focuses on professional teeth cleanings, periodontal maintenance, and patient education. She is dedicated to helping patients understand the importance of daily oral care and how periodontal health connects to overall wellness.
With specialized training in periodontal hygiene, Palak is uniquely equipped to monitor gum health, identify areas of concern early, and provide treatments like scaling and root planing when necessary.
